Exie Augusta Carroll was Born in 1897 near Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas. Her early years were spent in the farming communities of Brown's Creek, Owl Creek and Willow Springs in Bell County. When she was a young lady her parents, Jim and Annie Carroll, with their 11 children, moved to a farm east of Killeen, Texas. It was there Exie met a young man from a neighboring farm, Fred Blair. They became friends and later married in 1916.

From this union seven girls and one boy were born. Their daughter, Annie, recalls her father being the City Marshall of Killeen for many years. Fred worked many late hours and Annie fondly remembers her mother passing the time by teaching her and one of her sisters how to play forty- two.

"Exie was a devoted wife and mother and always enjoyed doing something for someone else" says Annie. "She was always thinking of the other person." She loved homemaking duties as well as sewing, quilting and embroidery. She always enjoyed a variety of table games. Her favorites were playing dominos, forty-two, canasta and scrabble. She also did tatting and crochet, making afghans of many sizes, a bedspread, and many smaller items as gifts. Church was very important to Exie and always filled a great part of her life.

Today, visits with her many relatives and friends are the highlights of her days. Annie says she recently found a class photo of her mother's dated in 1908. She showed the photo to her mother and was surprised when Exie named everyone in the photo.
